Description
Tsiga a novel by Wilson Katiyo is the story of a freedom fighter in Zimbabwe who returns to the streets of Harare after Independence determined to take revenge. This is Katiyo’s third novel which was edited after his death “Stunning – incredibly moving and disturbing but a wonderful piece of writing.” (Isobel Armstrong, Emeritus Proferssor of English, Birkbeck College, University of London. The adventures Tsiga describes introduce a range of topical characters and incidents. Some of them convey the desolate wasteland of a society that has disappointed its people. We are shown the powerful and ambitious ex-commander Jerry, politically corrupt and brutal in his domestic life; the philosophical tramp Twoboy who becomes the victim of urban violence and the vulnerable Emma who is too needy herself to provide Tsiga with the reassurance he seeks. Set against this are the traces of what might have been if post-Independence society had followed another path. There is the potential of Tsiga and Mara’s love, the happy family scenes when Gerry is absent and the caring nature of the poor woman who takes pity on a thirsty tramp. Tsiga’s story provides a kaleidoscopic view of a contemporary African society.
